I'm a postpartum educator and doula trainer living in Utah County. I am a full-time mom to 4, wife to a combat veteran from the United States Marines Corps, and business owner. Believe me when I say I wear the title of "World's Okayest Mom" with pride.

I didn't know it, but my passion for postpartum started when I was 9 years old. I'm half Costa Rican. And when my dad's family immigrated to California, they chose to stay together for the sake of family. "Siempre esten unidos" is our family motto-it means "always be united". My mother, bless her heart, had no idea what she was in for when she married into this bustling hub of a family. I still remember the bewildered look on her face when my abuelita (grandma) and all my tias (aunts) busted down the front door with their arms full of food, cleaning supplies, and gifts for my new baby sister. My mom was scolded and sent to bed and I was unceremoniously plopped into a sudsy bath and my hair cruelly brushed until I passed muster. Meanwhile, our home was cleaned and food was set to heat up on the stove. This went on for weeks. And then it happened all over again when my baby brother came home the following year. This is what I thought made up postpartum.

Unfortunately, this was not my experience when I gave birth to twins via cesarean in 2010. Away from my little bubble of family, I found myself isolated and struggling with something I would only later be able to put a name to-postpartum depression.

By the time I made it to my fourth child, I was rocking my second vaginal-birth-after-cesarean (VBAC) at home and building a postpartum plan fit for a goddess. The education that happened in-between my first and last births revolutionized the way I approached new motherhood. I went in confident in my abilities and supported by a community that saw to my physical, mental, and emotional needs. I was able to take charge of the experience and actually enjoy it for the first time in my life. And I know I can help others do the same.
